Conventional Boiler Systems

This type of system is most likely used in a house with loft space. Requires two water tanks located high up one a Cold Water Storage Tank the other an Expansion / Feed tank, also requires a Hot Water Cylinder. The storage cylinder holds a large quantity of hot water that is available immediately (or as soon as the feed allows). However when this store has been used up it has to be reheated, this could take anything up to 1 hour. This type of system is considered the least efficient as there are heat losses from the pipe work to and from the boiler to the cylinder and the cylinder itself.

Advantages of a Conventional Heating System

Good in areas with poor water pressure
Suitable for houses with 2 or more bathrooms
Stores water in tank should there be a shortage
High Efficiency Condensing versions are available
Can be a cost effective replacement option.

Disadvantages of a Conventional Heating System

Need 2 tanks in the loft and a hot water cylinder
Heating circuit for the radiators is open to contamination
Hot water is not pressurised
No pressure gauge for the central heating do leaks my go undetected
System can be more expensive for new installations
Hot water is an open circuit vulnerable to contamination
